About 30 miles south-west of Norwich
Gardener in Thetford
Breckland sand, forest-edge shade and gardens that dry out. The far side of a normal day from Norwich.
Thetford is the edge of where a Norwich-based gardener should claim to work. It is about thirty miles, through Wymondham and Attleborough, and it is a different landscape when you arrive. The Brecks drain. Lawns scorch earlier than they do on Norwich clay. Rabbits treat a new border as a buffet. Gardens on the forest edge sit in shade and needles, while the estates in town can be surprisingly open and dry.
That is why we are glad to quote one-off work here — a fence, a turf lawn, a jet wash, a makeover — and cautious about promising a weekly mow. A regular visit only makes sense when it shares a day with other Breckland jobs. If you want a fortnightly cut and you are the only garden out here, we will tell you it is not a fair arrangement for either of us.
Croxton, Kilverstone and Brettenham sit with the town for quoting. Further into the forest, or over the Suffolk border, ask. We would rather decline a fiddly half-hour than pretend West Norfolk distances start at Thetford. They do not. King’s Lynn is another conversation entirely, and not one this page is trying to win.

Services in Thetford
The full list is available here. These are the local reasons people book each one, not a copied menu.
- Jet washingDrives and patios still green up in winter, even on sand. A grouped day keeps the price sensible.
- Fence replacementA good use of the journey. We would rather spend a day on a boundary than an hour on a single panel, though a single panel is still possible if we are already in town.
- Fence & gate repairsWorth booking alongside another Thetford job. Ring early if a gap cannot wait and we will see whether we are already out this way.
- Hedge trimmingHedges here can be drier and slower than Norwich laurel. A hard cut needs judging species by species.
- Tree pruningGarden fruit trees, yes. Forest-scale pines and anything over a road, no.
- Lawn care & turf installationDrought shows first in the Brecks. We will not lay turf into a hot, unwatered week. Feeding is lighter-touch than on heavy clay.
- Regular garden maintenanceOnly when the diary already has a Breckland day. Ask, and expect an honest no if the travel does not stack up.
- Garden design & makeoversPlanting lists change here: drought-tolerant, rabbit-aware, and realistic about forest shade.
- Patios, paving & deckingSand is easier to dig and worse at holding a badly built edge. The base still has to be built, not hoped for.
