Norfolk

Lawns that get the work the soil actually needs

A Norfolk lawn might be heavy clay that smears in January or Breckland sand that burns off in June. The mower is the same. The rest of the care is not.

We mow, edge, scarify, overseed and feed domestic lawns, and we supply and lay turf where a lawn needs starting again or a new garden has been left as builders’ soil. Regular cutting sits happily inside a maintenance visit. Scarifying and turf are booked as their own jobs, because they make a mess and they need the right week.

Around Norwich and much of South Norfolk the ground holds water, moss creeps into shade, and a spring feed does more than another pass with a scarifier used in the wrong month. Out towards Thetford the sand drains fast, lawns dry, and rabbits will undo a new lawn if you do not plan for them. We will talk about your patch, not a national calendar stuck to the van.

What is included

  • Mowing and edging, one-off or on a round
  • Scarifying and moss removal when the lawn can recover afterwards
  • Overseeding thin areas and a feed matched to the season
  • Turf supply and laying, including ground preparation
  • A watering plan for the first fortnight of a new lawn — the watering itself is yours
  • Honest advice when shade, trees or compaction mean a perfect sward is unlikely

Worth knowing

  • New turf is only as good as the fortnight after it goes down. If nobody can water it, we should not lay it in a hot week.
  • Scarifying a brand-new lawn, or scarifying in a drought, does more harm than good. Autumn, while the grass is still growing, is the usual window here.
  • We do not promise a bowling green under mature trees. You can have a decent lawn, or you can have the trees. Often the right design is a bit of both.

How it usually runs

  1. 01

    Look at the lawn

Moss, weeds, bumps, shade and what the soil does in winter. Photos help; a visit is better before turf.

  2. 02

    Quote the right job

Sometimes that is four cuts and a feed. Sometimes it is strip it, level it and turf it.

  3. 03

    Aftercare in writing

Especially for turf: when to water, when to make the first cut, and when to keep off it.

Questions

When is the best time to lay turf in Norfolk?

Spring and early autumn, when the ground is warm enough to root and the rain is doing some of the work. Midsummer lays can succeed if you water properly. Midwinter lays on saturated clay often should wait.

Do you just mow, without a contract?

Yes. One-off cuts before a visit, or a regular slot in the growing season. There is no tie-in dressed up as a plan.

Can you level a lumpy lawn?

Shallow hollows can be top-dressed over time. A lawn that hides builders’ rubble wants lifting or replacing. We will not top-dress our way across a buried brick.

We cover Norwich and the Norfolk towns on the areas we cover page. If the garden is further out, ring and ask — the answer depends on the size of the job.
